RNAS Yeovilton International Air Day 2010 - 10th July - Preview

RNAS Yeovilton will be celebrating its 70th Anniversary in 2010 and the International Air Day on Saturday 10th July offers a justifiable opportunity to look back on the 70 glorious years since RNAS Yeovilton was commissioned as HMS Heron.

From the hectic days in 1940, when the Air Station took shape as a base for training Naval Aviators and Fighter controllers, through the Korean War and Suez crisis during the 1950’s operating Sea Furys, Sea Hawks and Sea Venoms, to the heyday of fixed wing Naval Aviation in the 1960’s and 70’s when the surrounding countryside reverberated to the sound of Sea Vixens and Phantoms, RNAS Yeovilton has grown to become one of the busiest military airfields in the United Kingdom and is amongst the largest in Europe. Yeovilton Squadrons played a key part in the Falklands Campaign in 1982 and have remained at the forefront of operations, including the Gulf War, Bosnia and Sierra Leone. Since 2007, helicopters from the Commando Helicopter Force have been deployed to Afghanistan in support of forces on the Helmand region, and the Lynx Force are equally busy in operations embarked in ships around the world, most notably engaged in high profile anti-piracy and drugs operations.

An extensive flying and static display will take place to mark this significant anniversary with historic aircraft such as the Swordfish, Seafire, Sea Fury, Sea Hawk and Sea Vixen, coming together with other vintage aircraft and their modern counterparts to highlight the role that RNAS Yeovilton Squadrons have played, and continue to play, in operations throughout the decades to the present day.
