With the dark long winter nights set in, it’s time to look back at some of the outstanding moments of the 2012 Airshow Season, one of the best seasons of recent times.
There can be no doubt that 2012 has been a very special year in the UK. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Games created a very special atmosphere throughout the summer, but perhaps one of the most significant moments was Danny Boyle’s incredible Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games. One of the most memorable moments of the Ceremony was a film sequence featuring the Queen and 007 James Bond (played by Daniel Craig) traveling across London to the Opening Ceremony. The sequence culminated with the Queen and Bond parachuting in to the Olympic Park from over the stadium live on the night!
For the actual jump, the Queen was played by parachutist Gary Connery who had already hit the headlines earlier in the year for making a wingsuit jump without a parachute! On that occasion he make a landing on a large line of stacked cardboard boxes.
Gary’s appearance at Wings and Wheels was memorable because no one really knew what to expect. It was not really an ideal day for Gary with a fairly brisk wind, some low cloud and also the airspace restrictions over Dunsfold. What Gary did do was put on a show arriving a an AC Cobra before transferring to a helicopter for his jump. Despite only being able to jump from low level, Gary’s wingsuit took him sweeping over the crowdline before he pulled his parachute and landed right in front of the commentators. A great piee of showmanship that was clearly appreciated by the Dunsfold crowds and commentators!
