Shoreham Airshow breaks fundraising record

This years ‘Shoreham Airshow’ has broken all records for raising funds for ‘The Royal Air Forces Association’. A cheque in excess of £155,000 will be handed over to the association in the near future. Don Bean MBE the airshow organiser said. “I am delighted to be able to hand over this amount to RAFA. A lot of effort by the team at Shoreham has made this possible. One also must remember that they are all volunteers with many non members mixing with members of Shoreham RAFA to run it. I do hope that Headquarters appreciate our efforts – as in the current economic climate this is a lot of money to be raised for one charity and we trust that this will be spent wisely.”

“The 2010 event is now being planned,” said John Periam, the Airshow Press Officer, adding, “It will centre on the 70th Anniversary of The Battle of Britain and the 100th Anniversary of Shoreham Airport, the oldest airport in the country. This year’s show received very high praise from the aviation media classing it now as one of the best in the UK.  It is run to high standards by a small dedicated team that has gained a wealth of knowledge over the past 20 year’s.”

“The visit this year by the ‘Chief of The Air Staff , Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton, was great honour for us all. Little did Peter Eager our Display Director and I know what we were letting ourselves in for when we had a small Fete in the eastern corner of the airfield all those years ago. A lot older and a lot wiser we hope that we will be able to find some new members to join our busy team to keep the event going on for another 20 years!” said Don. “I would also like to add that we cannot run this show without our many sponsors who support us in a variety of ways along, with the local and national media.” He added, “Next years dates are fixed for August 21st and 22nd. To date we have now raised in excess of well over £1.5million for RAFA putting us well on the way to reaching that magic two million pounds.”

2010 Airshow Calendar – new dates and new formats

Posted by Flightline UK on 23/11/2009 under Civilian Organised Airshows and Trade Events | Be the First to Comment

As we get closer to Christmas, the 2010 Airshow Calendar is taking shape. As well as all the regular events, there is a new airshow to be held at RAF Bentwaters on the 13th June 2010. This show builds on the success of the Cold War Museum Open Days. Though the Museum will not be open, there will be a full day’s entertainment at the base with a variety of acts taking part.

Moving into August, the wonderful Sywell Airshow returns on the 22nd August. This is going to be a very busy weekend for display crews with the large south coast airshows at Bouremouth and Shoreham taking place that weekend as well.

Finally, Dunsfold Wings and Wheels takes the step into becoming a two day show in 2010. 2009 was marked by very large crowds and even longer queues to get out of the secretive Surrey aerodrome. Hopefully a two day event may spread the load!

British and Australian Air Race Rivals Form an Alliance to Display Warbirds

Red Bull Air Race Pilot Nigel Lamb is travelling 10,500 miles to visit the Temora Aviation Museum, Australia and take the opportunity to display one or both of the museums Mk XVI and MkVIII Spitfires on 28th & 29th November.

Nigel Lamb comments; ‘I am excited to be participating in the next flying day. My first visit to Temora was before the museum was built and my last was in 2001 to fly the Mk Vlll Spitfire in its inaugural display with the museum. Coincidently, I flew the MK XVl’s last display in New Zealand at Wanaka in 2006 so it’ll be a special pleasure for me to see her in her new home’

On this trip Nigel will team up with fellow air-race rival Matt Hall who will be displaying a P-51 Mustang that he part shares. These two fiercely competitive pilots last met in Barcelona, for the finale of the Red Bull Air Race World Championships, and both ended up with podium positions. Nigel Lamb, second in the Barcelona Race, and Matt Hall third in the overall championships, a great result for his rookie year.

‘Aside from getting an update on developments at TAM, It’ll be fantastic to participate in an event alongside Matt Hall rather than as a competitor in the Red Bull Air Race’ Said Nigel ‘Matt has had an exceptional debut year. To have finished third overall is a truly amazing result. Matt has set the bar very high and left many of us with plenty to do next year’

Matt Hall comments; “It is not often you get a pilot the calibre of Nigel Lamb in Australia and I am honoured to be able to do some demonstrations with he and David Lowy, who himself is an extremely capable airman.”

This will be an excellent opportunity for the two pilots to fly for pleasure in place of podiums, share a mutual appreciation of vintage aircraft and show their unique ability to fly them. These machines are to be admired not pushed to their limits; the question is… who will lead the formation? Or who will win the race to the bar afterwards?

David Lowy AM President and Founder of the Temora Aviation Museum concludes; ‘Nigel is a long-time friend of the Museum and has provided a valuable contribution to the standards and safety culture at the Museum over the years. It is a privilege that we have the opportunity to benefit from someone of his experience and skill. Visitors to the Museum will also be able to meet Nigel and hear first hand of his many experiences flying Warbirds, Aerobatics and Racing in the Red Bull Air Race.”

Remembrance Day at Imperial War Museum Duxford

Posted by Flightline UK on 05/11/2009 under Museums | Be the First to Comment

On Remembrance Sunday, ImperialWar Museum Duxford will be holding a special service of remembrance.

Admission to the Museum is free for all on this day and we very much hope that people will take this opportunity to explore IWM Duxford on the day when members of the Armed Forces, who have lost their lives in active service, are remembered. At 11.00am, there will be a candle-lighting ceremony in the American Air Museum to remember the US Forces who fought and died in the Second World War, and to honour the US service personnel who continue to make the ultimate sacrifice. A representative of the 492nd Fighter Group, RAF Lakenheath, will undertake the candlelighting ceremony.

The Remembrance Service will commence at 12.30pm and will be preceded by a marching display featuring Sawston Youth Group Band with local air cadets. There will be standard bearers from the Royal British Legion and the Burma Star Association.

The ImperialWar Museum Family History Group will be on hand to answer questions regarding tracing family history. The ImperialWar Museum archives are a memorial to
those who have suffered and died in conflict from the FirstWorld War to the present day. They offer a wealth of material for the family history researcher. Imperial War Museum staff will offer advice on how to negotiate the archives to resolve your family history queries.

Imperial War Museum Duxford’s Department for Learning will be offering hands-on activities for families, encouraging children to understand more about the significance and history of Remembrance Day. Between 10.00am and 3.00pm, families will be able to read the story of why we use the poppy as a symbol of remembrance, make their own poppy or make a stained glass window.

Join us at historic ImperialWar Museum Duxford to remember those who gave their lives, in conflicts past and present, to ensure that the world continues to enjoy the freedom that it does today.

Imperial War Museum Duxford is open 10.00am to 4.00pm.

Imperial War Museum Duxford is just south of Cambridge at junction 10 of the M11. Ample free parking is available. For further information, visit http://www.iwm.org.uk/duxford or telephone 01223 835 000.
