NEWS: Visit the Vulcan Days 2013

The Vulcan Restoration Trust are pleased to announce that we will be holding four Visit the Vulcan open days at London Southend Airport during 2013 on the following dates:

Sunday 28 April
Sunday 16 June
Sunday 11 August
Sunday 29 September

Visitors will be able to get a close-up view of Vulcan XL426 and talk to the volunteers who look after her. There will also be the chance to climb inside the Vulcan’s cockpit and see at first-hand the cramped conditions in which XL426′s five-man crew had to work. Our Visit the Vulcan days are a vital part of our ongoing fund raising to help preserve Southend’s Vulcan.

The gates at each Visit the Vulcan day will open at 10.00 a.m. and last admission will be at 4.00 p.m. Small entry fee to be paid on the gate, plus an additional small fee (including children) for cockpit visits. The Vulcan’s cockpit is small so visits are subject to availability. Cockpit visits take place at 15 minute intervals and timed visit tickets can be purchased on the day to avoid having to queue. Ticket prices for each have yet to be finalised. Admission for VRT Members carrying a current membership card is free. VRT Members are also entitled to a free cockpit visit. We regret that no pets can be admitted to our Visit the Vulcan days because of airport regulations. Assistance dogs are permitted.

A selection of Vulcan souvenirs and memorabilia will be on sale from our stand. Teas, coffees, alcoholic beverages and lunches will be available throughout each day from the Lancaster Bar & Restaurant, which is situated next to the Vulcan.

Visitors are encouraged to arrive by train. London Southend Airport station is only two minutes walk from the Vulcan and is served by frequent trains on the London Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria line. Those arriving by car can park in the airport’s short stay car parks which are situated by the new passenger terminal and for which there is a charge. The short stay car parks are situated approximately two to four minutes walk from XL426. Sadly we can offer no parking facilities to visitors (including disabled badge holders) other than those offered by the airport.

AIRSHOW NEWS: Petition to Save Southend Air Festival

News story taken from Heart.

A petition has been started to save the Southend Air Show after the council announced it was scrapping the annual event.

The move will save £130,000 a year as the authority is forced to save further money in the face of less funding from central government.

But there has been strong criticism of the plans to cut the event which brings hundreds of thousands of people to the town over the weekend in May.

Simon John Ewing and Thomas Curtis both had the idea of starting a petition against the decision and are now joining forces to keep Southend Air Show going.

Simon told Heart: “There’s a lot of anger and confusion because it is such a popular event. Hopefully Southend councillors will change their mind because this is part of the town’s heritage.

“But with corporate sponsors it could still go ahead. Lots of local businesses such as hotels benefit from the influx of visitors so perhaps they should also contribute.”

Thomas told Heart: “The Air Show brings a lot of joy to the town and it brings a lot of people to the town. It is a flagship event for Southend and if you take that away fewer people will come here.

“Once the air show is gone it is going to be unlikely to come back. Other air shows will take flights and it will be much more expensive to run it again in the future.

“We can’t just raise it from the dead.”

Southend Council Leader Nigel Holdcroft said: “We are now into the third year of the austerity measures and these financial decisions are becoming harder and harder to make.

“Some of the savings we are proposing won’t be popular with residents but I would ask them to bear in mind that this crisis was not of our making.”

AIRSHOW NEWS: Southend Airshow Cancelled, though not scrapped completely

An article posted by the Southend Echo today has said the Southend Air Festival 2013 has been cancelled following Council Budget cuts.

Council leader Nigel Holdcroft said: “We no longer have any leeway and we have to make real cuts to services in order to balance our books – and that involves making some very hard choices.

“Some of the savings we are proposing won’t be popular with residents but I would ask them to bear in mind that this crisis was not of our making.”

Heart Radio reports that the cancellation may not be a total loss, pointing out the event has not been scrapped completely.

“The Air Show will no longer run as an annual event, although not scrapped completely, to save £130,000.”

AIRSHOW NEWS: easyjet confirmed as Southend Air Festival sponsor

From the Southend Standard

easyJet has been confirmed as the main sponsor of the Southend Airshow.

The spectacular summer show is one of the jewels in the crown of Southend’s annual entertainment programme and the UK’s biggest airline has stepped in to provide much-needed cash.

The event, which attracts about 300,000 visitors to Southend, was funded by Southend Council last year and in 2010 it had no headline sponsor.

The event has been held annually on the late May bank holiday weekend for 26 years, but in recent years most of the £250,000 staging costs have fallen on the council – Maxims Casino was the last sponsor in 2009.

Now this year’s airshow will take place on Saturday 26 and Sunday May 27, a week before the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration weekend which will kick-start a summer of events in Southend.

The event is two days packed full of barrel rolls, nosedives and loop-the-loops as the skies above Southend seafront become the focus for thousands of aviation fans.

Families flock to the seaside for displays including the world-famous Red Arrows, wingwalkers and a host of other planes, as well as music and other entertainment shows.

From 4traders:-

easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, today announced it will be the lead sponsor for the 2012 Southend Air Festival. Around half a million people are expected to attend this year’s popular Air Festival which will take place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 May 2012.

Hugh Aitken, easyJet’s Commercial Manager, said:

“easyJet is delighted to be the lead sponsor of this year’s Southend Air Festival – it is a unique event which really showcases what the town has to offer.

“London Southend Airport is easyJet’s newest UK base and, as a local airline and employer, we can’t think of a better way to start our partnership with Southend than by supporting its most famous event.”

As part of the sponsorship deal easyJet will ensure that it publicises the air show to millions of its passengers and will be supporting the event
onboard and through its social media channels.

Cllr Derek Jarvis Portfolio holder for Culture and Tourism is looking forward to the key event.

“We are preparing a very special year of events in 2012 with the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee both being celebrated here. The Air Festival really does launch our summer season and its timing just before the Queen’s special celebrations, means we can give our many visitors a taste of the months of festivities and events ahead.”

The first in the season of air shows, visitors to this year’s Southend Air Festival will enjoy the aerial delights of vintage, fast and military aircraft whilst also enjoying one of the country’s favourite destinations.

The Air Festival will bring Southend’s revitalised new seafront to life with fun for all the family on both Saturday and Sunday with ground attractions, entertainment, music, food and fun.  With fun parks, public fountains, museums, galleries and of course the longest pleasure pier in the world, Southend really shines over Air Festival weekend.

easyJet’s inaugural flight from London Southend Airport will take off on the 2 April 2012, with routes available to Alicante, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Belfast, Faro, Ibiza, Jersey, Majorca and Malaga with prices starting from £24.99 (one-way including taxes). 70 easyJet flights per week will take off from London Southend, making it the ideal gateway for both business and leisure travel across Europe.
